HENRY DARGER

Last week, I went to the beautiful exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris.

There was also an event set up for La Nuit des Musées. I listened to the beautiful album composed by Philippe Cohen Solal. He was so inspired by Henry Darger's work, he created music to go with it. The result is lyrical and will carry you in Darger's world.

I read his autobiography so I knew what to expect.

If you're in Paris these days, I highly recommend to go and see his drawings.

Jiří Trnka

Le travail enchanteur de Jiří Trnka (1912-1969), cinéaste d'animation tchèque, mais aussi peintre, illustrateur, sculpteur, créateur de costumes et de décors pour le cinéma et le théâtre.

Créatif précoce, il intègre l'Académie d'Architecture, d'Art et de Design de Prague, tout en travaillant d'abord pour Josef Skupa, marionnettiste de renom, puis dans un atelier de gravure.

Il dessine et illustre les contes des frères Grimm, ceux de Charles Perrault, les Mille et une nuit, des histoires de La Fontaine, Alice au pays des merveilles...

Il se voit confier le poste de chef décorateur au Théâtre National de Prague tout en préservant sa passion pour les marionnettes.

En 1958, il était en charge de la décoration du pavillon tchèque à l'Exposition Universelle de Bruxelles.

Son œuvre fut récompensée dans de nombreux festivals (Cannes, Venise, Locarno...), au cours desquelles il reçu une cinquantaine de distinctions.

MARISA MERZ

Marisa Merz passed away last Friday at the age of 93.

The Italian artist was the only woman in the Arte Povera movement that began in the late 1960s.

Quite discrete, she however was awarded a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2013 and a big retrospective started in 2017 at the The Hammer Museum, The Sky Is a Great Space and moved to New York, Los Angeles, Saltzburg, Austria and Porto (why not Paris ?).

I like her work of remarkable finesse and poetry.

THE FLOATING PIERS

Don't know how I did not heard about this work by Christo which has been realized only 3 years ago.
I love their work so much !
Floating Piers is a project imagined by the couple in the 1970s but they didn't find the right place for this somptuous project.

What I like most about their work is that their installations in situ are always accessible to everyone. 

In the case of Floating Piers, people can walk there. 

There is a real social dimension. 

As Jeanne-Claude died in 2009, Christo finalized this work without her. 

This is an "extension of the streets" according to the Bulgarian artist. 

In Lombardy, floating bridges have been deployed on several kilometers on the Lake Iseo. 

This huge bright yellow bridge made with more than a thousand floating platforms invited visitors to stroll on the water between the village of Sulzano and the island of San Paolo and the island of Monte Isola.

KARLA BLACK

J'ai découvert le travail de Karla Black il y a quelques années.

Cette artiste écossaise née en 1972 est notamment connue pour ses installations éphémères ou plutôt "sculptures" comme elle nomme ses oeuvres.

Nominée pour le Prix Turner en 2011, elle avait participé à la Biennale de Venise la même année et on a pu à nouveau contempler son travail à Venise en 2017.   

Dans le cadre du Festival d'Automne à Paris, elle réalise deux installations au sein des Archives Nationales et aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. 

Ces expositions simultanées répondent avant tout aux lieux dans lesquels l'artiste s'est adaptée.

Plâtre, rouge à lèvre, poudres, coton, savon, cellophane, papier toilette... sont ses matériaux de prédilection.

En arrivant aux Beaux-Arts, j'ai été frappée d'une grande émotion en voyant (enfin) son travail.

Ses compositions me touchent de par leur poésie, leur féminité et l'appel aux sens que cela procure.
